As the monsoon winds and storms blow through this time of year, our yards and homes in Phoenix, Arizona, tend to see disarray and even damage. Make sure that you check your roof for signs of broken or missing tiles, and that the flashings and vents are all still in place and in good condition.
It’s a best practice to visually inspect your roof a few times each year so that you know what it should look like. Caution: do NOT go out onto a tile roof; make this inspection from the ground level. After a storm, if you see anything that looks out of the ordinary, call a roofing contractor - qualified licensed contractors - to make a further inspection and any needed repairs.

Pool contractors get loads of questions from homeowners in the Phoenix area about water levels during the summer. With our hot, dry climate, sometimes you might begin to wonder if all that water loss is really just evaporation.
Fortunately there’s an easy way to tell: Take a large plastic bucket (about 5 gallons) and sink it onto the first or second step of the pool. Make sure that the water level in the bucket exactly matches the water level of the pool, and make a mark on the side of the bucket with waterproof ink at the water level.
Check back throughout the week. As long as the water in the bucket mirrors the water level of the pool, you are seeing normal evaporation. If the water in the pool drops SIGNIFICANTLY faster than the water in the bucket, you might want to consult a pool care professional or pool builder to have them check for leaks.

As the weather changes back to longer, warmer days it is time to adjust the automatic sprinkler system. In the Arizona summers it is best to water during the late evening or early morning, and your yard will need longer, more frequent settings. If you do not have a timed watering system, find out how affordable the installation can be with a licensed contractor or landscaping service. In the long run you will save money on plant replacement and water bills if your system is set up to automatically care for your yard’s needs.

Even though our Arizona weather has been mostly moderate this winter, chances are good that your home has spent more days closed up than open recently. This can tend to create a humid, musty, stale smell, which will be even stronger if your home has children or pets. Opening the windows goes a long way towards fresh air, but the closed up smell returns as soon as the windows are shuddered again. It is time to have the carpets professionally cleaned. The stale air that was trapped in your home has worked its way down into the carpet, and a good thorough cleaning should brighten up both the look of your carpets and the quality of your indoor air.
