High Winds Can Damage Roofs

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

As the monsoon winds and storms blow through this time of year, our yards and homes in Phoenix, Arizona, tend to see disarray and even damage.  Make sure that you check your roof for signs of broken or missing tiles, and that the flashings and vents are all still in place and in good condition.

It’s a best practice to visually inspect your roof a few times each year so that you know what it should look like.  Caution:  do NOT go out onto a tile roof; make this inspection from the ground level.  After a storm, if you see anything that looks out of the ordinary, call a roofing contractor - qualified licensed contractors - to make a further inspection and any needed repairs.

Trees Uprooted by Monsoon Storms

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

When a monsoon storm sweeps through the Phoenix valley, it can leave trees uprooted and broken in its wake.  Determining whether a tree can be saved is a judgment for a landscape professional or tree specialist.  Often, a simple replanting will leave the tree vulnerable to the next storm.  A landscape professional will evaluate the tree’s health and viability, provide adequate staking, and adjust the watering system to ensure deeper root growth.

Consulting with professionals before storms arrive can make an even bigger difference.  Often the same steps - evaluation, staking, and irrigation - can save the tree from being uprooted in the first place.  As monsoons move through Arizona, make sure your trees are ready to weather the storm.
