Reset Your Sprinkler Timers

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Here in Phoenix, Arizona, it seems like home owners are constantly resetting the watering times of their automatic sprinklers.  While it is really just twice a year, it is an important step to take for the health of your yard and landscaping.

In Phoenix, AZ, our temperatures vary by more than 60 degrees during a typical winter day or summer day.  In order to maximize water usage and keep your plants fresh and stable, it is important to recognize the different needs.  In the winter months, run the sprinklers in the midday, for shorter periods, and less days per week.  This ensures that your landscaping receives adequate water but does not cause freezing or root rot.  In the summer months, water overnight or early morning, longer periods, and more days per week.  This uses the water efficiently and ensures that none is lost to evaporation.

If you have difficulty deciphering the codes of your sprinkler system control box, contact a reputable landscape maintenance company or other licensed contractors.

Choosing a Licensed Contractor

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

The lowest price might seem like a smart decision, but when it comes to choosing a contractor that can prove to be a costly mistake for bargain hunters.  An unlicensed contractor or unqualified contractor can leave you with sub-standard work on one of the most significant assets you own:  your Arizona home.

The Arizona Registrar of Contractors (AROC) website offers free information for consumers about how to locate and choose a licensed contractor.  The website explains that, “… with a licensed contractor, you as a residential property owner have significant protections not available to persons utilizing an unlicensed contractor.  This is your guarantee should the workmanship be below standard or in violation of existing codes.”  Fortunately, AROC makes it easy to verify the license and good standing of all contractors in the state.  Contact them at www.azroc.gov or by calling 602-542-1525 or toll free

High Winds Can Damage Roofs

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

As the monsoon winds and storms blow through this time of year, our yards and homes in Phoenix, Arizona, tend to see disarray and even damage.  Make sure that you check your roof for signs of broken or missing tiles, and that the flashings and vents are all still in place and in good condition.

It’s a best practice to visually inspect your roof a few times each year so that you know what it should look like.  Caution:  do NOT go out onto a tile roof; make this inspection from the ground level.  After a storm, if you see anything that looks out of the ordinary, call a roofing contractor - qualified licensed contractors - to make a further inspection and any needed repairs.
